Deutsch 1
Deutsch 1 is designed for the true beginner or someone who has studied German in the past, but needs a fresh start. Targeted levels: A1.1 (CEFR)/Novice Low (ACTFL).
Skills practiced in this class are:
- Introducing yourself: talking about origin, nationality, family and friends
- Describing yourself and others: appearance and character traits
- Identifying and describing the most common objects in your environment
- Talking about your daily schedule, routine activities, and hobbies
- Shopping for clothing and conversing about weather-appropriate apparel
- Expressing likes/dislikes
- Grammar structures include the present tense, word order in statements, questions, and commands, polite requests, introduction to the gender and case system.
- This course covers the first two chapters in the textbook (Kontakte).

Deutsch 2
Deutsch 2 expands students' communicative skills in the present tense. The class is an optimal refresher to those who have had some exposure to German, but have not used the language in a while and would like to improve their communication skills in situations related to daily routine activities. Targeted levels: A1.2 (CEFR)/Novice Mid (ACTFL).
Skills practiced in this class are:
- Conversing about daily schedules, routine activities, and pastimes
- Describing the most common objects in your home
- Addressing needs and wishes
- Ordering food and drinks in a cafe or restaurant
- Shopping in a department store and at the market
- Talking about abilities and talents, tasks and responsibilities
- Talking about motives and giving reasons for one's actions
- New grammar structures include the accusative case, modal verbs, and sentence structure in main & dependent clauses
- This course covers chapters 2 and 3 in the textbook (Kontakte)

Deutsch 3
Continuation of Deutsch 2. This class works on the fundamentals of communication in the present tense and the colloquial past (Praesens & Perfekt).
The class is an optimal refresher to learners of German who would like to improve their communication skills related to routine activities in the present and the colloquial past. Targeted levels: A1.2 (CEFR)/Novice High (ACTFL).
Skills practiced in this class are:
- Conversing about past activities and events
- Talking about daily schedules, routine activities, and pastimes
- Giving and receiving, asking for and offering help with everyday activities
- Discussing the work-place and career path(s), school and education
- Talking about life at home with a focus on the kitchen, cooking habits, and house-chores
- Describing the city and the neighborhood (in focus: location)
- New grammar structures include the colloquial past (Perfekt), ordinal numbers, the dative case, and sentence structure in main & dependent clauses.

Deutsch 4
Continuation of Deutsch 3. The class is an optimal refresher to learners of German who would like to improve their communication skills related to routine activities in the present and the colloquial past (Praesens & Perfekt). Targeted levels: A1.2-A2.1 (CEFR)/Novice Mid-High (ACTFL).
Skills practiced in this class are:
- Conversing about past activities and events
- Talking about one's home: living arrangements and house-chores, renting, buying, re-modelling and envisioning one's dream house
- Talking about geography: describing the country, the city, and the neighborhood
- Going places and ways of getting there: means of transportation, travel arrangements, driving and dealing with traffic
- New grammar structures include two-way prepositions for location and destination, the comparison of adjectives and adverbs, the simple past of haben and sein, and relative clauses.

Deutsch 5
Continuation of Deutsch 4. This class continues working on the fundamentals of communication in the present tense and the colloquial past (Praesens & Perfekt) and introduces the future tense and the simple past (Futur & Praeteritum).
The class is an optimal refresher to learners of German who would like to grow more confident in using the present and future tense, the simple and colloquial past while reviewing some of the basic grammar structures of German. Targeted levels: A2.1 (CEFR)/Intermediate Low (ACTFL).
Skills practiced in this class are:
- Talking about food and eating habits, grocery shopping, cooking and favorite recipes or dishes
- Going out: making a restaurant reservation, attending or organizing a dinner party
- Looking ahead: making plans for the future, predictions, and speculations
- Reminiscing about one's childhood and youth, telling stories from one's past
- Learning about and re-telling some of the most famous German fairy tales
- New grammar structures include the future tense and the simple past, adjective declension, sequence of events in past narration (the past perfect)

Deutsch 6
Continuation of Deutsch 5. This class reviews the fundamentals of communication in the present tense and the colloquial past (Praesens & Perfekt) and introduces the subjunctive mode and the passive voice.
The class is an optimal refresher to learners of German who would like to review some of the basic grammar structures of German and learn about more complex structures in preparation for the intermediary level of German. Targeted levels: A2 (CEFR)/Intermediate Low (ACTFL).
Skills practiced in this class are:
- Going places: making travel arrangements, booking flights/trains, hotels, driving and dealing with traffic
- Navigating the city: asking for and giving directions
- Talking about health and well-being, body-care, going to the doctor's, buying medicine, dealing with illness, emergencies, and accidents
- Talking about money and financial issues, banking and personal financial decisions
- New grammar structures include the subjunctive mode of modal verbs, the passive voice, polite requests and indirect questions, and the genitive case.
- This course covers chapters 10 to 12 in the textbook (Kontakte)

- Free-time activities and wishes (using the subjunctive)
- Making plans to attend events and describing past events
- Describing objects and expressing opinions, likes and dislikes; practicing the declension of adjectives
- Making comparisons when shopping for something, talking about financial decisions and planning.
- Discussing interests and describing collections related to hobbies.

This class reviews the fundamentals of communication in German and helps learners become more comfortable with alternating grammatical voices, modes, and tenses, while increasing idiomatic usage of the language in informal conversation. Targeted levels: B1.1 (CEFR)/Intermediate Mid (ACTFL). Recommended for adults, 16 and older.
Skills practiced in this class are:
- recollecting past events, sharing childhood memories
- using the simple past (Praeteritum), using a sequence of tenses in the past
- understanding and discussing a written or spoken news article
- expressing opinions and preferences, contrasts and contradictions
- negotiating and reaching consensus in a discussion
- using relative clauses to describe persons and circumstances
